These two communities are known for being the doors to the Amazon. There is tourism, but the local inhabitants have been neglected by the development that has taken place. There are few facilities to care for the needs of the local population. It is within these facilities that the work of the volunteers or interns are strongly needed.
The Ministry of Social Welfare (Ministerio de Bienestar Social) operates a center for elderly citizens, where they get medical care, physical Rehab, Counseling and legal aid. The most common legal issues are related to land ownership.
By law, pregnant girls cannot attend public schools, therefore this foundation assists young girls (17 and under) who need to complete their high school education and acquire a skill which could prepare her to be self-supportive. Most of these girls are poor, neglected by family and partner.
It raises funds to educate and feed street children. It provides free breakfast and lunch for those who seek the help of this foundation. The system neglects the old, this sometimes is the only alternative left.
