This area is formed by an array of small fishing communities. Located in the northern part of the Guayas Province, along the shores of the Pacific Manglaralto is a sub-region of the Machalilla area. Natives of this community often make a limited living from the sea. Still using rather primitive methods of fishing, the tourist industry is beginning to develop in the area. It is a poor area with limited educational facilities. In Manglaralto, there is a Day Care Center that is in need of volunteers and an elementary school (K-6) that has two teachers where additional help is needed. Many families in this community are willing to share their modest homes with visiting volunteers. Volunteers interested in this community should be flexible and adaptable, ready and willing to share life in an area of great beauty but limited facilities.
In this community, volunteers will be expected to assist the teachers and day care centers in their daily routines. Volunteers will be aides to the teachers, helping them set up for class and take care of the students during the school day. The same goes for the Child Care Centers, volunteers will help set up projects and assist any clubs or groups that are established. Volunteers interested in working in the field of social science can be placed with a Community Development Center to help resolve some of the area’s many social issues. Whether related to labor (with the cannery), land ownership, fishing sites or the like, the community is willing to accept volunteers or interns with open arms.
